The art of papier mache is believed to have been introduced to Kashmir by the Sufi mystic , Mir Sayyad Ali Hamdani in the late 14 th century.

Two sets of artisans create this beautiful craft.

The Sakhtabaz makes the basis shape with a mix of paper pulp, cotton, straws of the rice plant and copper sulphate.

The Naqquash does the painted ornamentation on the surface.
